<br />
Hello!<br />
<br />
I want you to know that the tandem bike which you built for me in 1987 is still a beautiful and functional piece of machinery. The weekend of June 1, 2014 my bike was one of very few tandems participating in <a href="https://www.bikethewest.com/americas-most-beautiful-bike-ride/" target="_blank">America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride</a> around Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border.<br />
<br />
The attached picture shows us near the summit of the first mountain pass. Yes, the bike is from the era when you labeled the bikes as 'Sterling.'<br />

<br />
Dear Steve Bilenky & the Whole Bilenky Team,<br />
<br />
I just wanted to reach out and thank you for your wonderful work in metal. I’m looking forward to reading the review of your tandem in the upcoming <a href="http://www.bikequarterly.com/" target="_blank">Bicycle Quarterly</a>.<br />
<br />
I am aware of your factory and some of your philosophy, which I call rebuilding an older mode of transportation over the ashes of a newer one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiH2Wuyyo3nLlB3w631eLbigupIM8GhTzAK2MnPO6c1vqCyrgPAL27y_Y_WtYKLrwwWBpuUBDxfdOPwRwkF3QTzmZO-UaveN6vRLosYkQ-1ZqigctlQxmd0OkOp6QDuVjChiDWHlR48JE/s1600/94Tourlite4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiH2Wuyyo3nLlB3w631eLbigupIM8GhTzAK2MnPO6c1vqCyrgPAL27y_Y_WtYKLrwwWBpuUBDxfdOPwRwkF3QTzmZO-UaveN6vRLosYkQ-1ZqigctlQxmd0OkOp6QDuVjChiDWHlR48JE/s1600/94Tourlite4.jpeg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Anyway, I just love your dedication to MAKING THINGS. I, too, love to make things. I have recently completed assembling my own bicycle on a <a href="http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/frames/polyvalent-mkiii.html" target="_blank">Velo Orange Polyvalent</a> frame (except for the arduous task, for a novice, of fishing the wiring for the headlight from the dynamo hub through the front fork & up through the fender). Yes, I learned how to lace and true wheels, although I finally got so frustrated with the finicky details, I had the bike shop give the wheels their final tensioning. And I have enough bike tools that I guess my NEXT bike will be RELATIVELY inexpensive!<br />
<br />
As I say to people who look at me, astonished, and say, “You built your own bicycle?”, I say, “Well, I only built it out of PARTS, I didn’t build it out of ROCKS.” The parts are designed to fit together! I am sure you are very aware of that great little book, <i><a href="http://www.thetoasterproject.org/" target="_blank">The Toaster Project</a></i>, and REALLY building something out of rocks! If we can see farther, and do more, it is only because we stand on the shoulders of giants.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL7QARrr20XB5EN38-NGRN8hfeY4dud8mctnRHWIs1FENRL2c_1Szv2SXteXZlwB18xkkFBY5EO2Gdz1cRPqmBdUH2EkUAs5o4w1wZZfNHHcva0vYASO4y5crJhFn7XzyF27y4gIx73cU/s1600/94Tourlite2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL7QARrr20XB5EN38-NGRN8hfeY4dud8mctnRHWIs1FENRL2c_1Szv2SXteXZlwB18xkkFBY5EO2Gdz1cRPqmBdUH2EkUAs5o4w1wZZfNHHcva0vYASO4y5crJhFn7XzyF27y4gIx73cU/s1600/94Tourlite2.jpeg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Imagine all of those toiling, dirty, sweaty, hot metal smiths of the distant past, in front of their kilns and banging on their anvils, each one perhaps adding one little improvement to metalworking, making metals more pure, coming up with new alloys, making a more resilient sword or shield, making lots and lots and LOTS of mistakes along the way, but a few of those mistakes turning out to be advances in the craft. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidVr9btGp3wGe6VY5RknllAKaKcSUJHn6T3c1PZHQAdjFeXezCUjluBOFJz0CFz1tK9wQaFmW4AaAqmS_XyQYKbZijqCIScPBQHf0wi_gsr0MUaGm8fdJKIGGeMHTVBP1RVqEe4an9EdA/s1600/94Tourlite3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidVr9btGp3wGe6VY5RknllAKaKcSUJHn6T3c1PZHQAdjFeXezCUjluBOFJz0CFz1tK9wQaFmW4AaAqmS_XyQYKbZijqCIScPBQHf0wi_gsr0MUaGm8fdJKIGGeMHTVBP1RVqEe4an9EdA/s1600/94Tourlite3.jpeg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I was (and am) a woodworker, and I felt a kind of snobbish distaste for metal. But then I got into building this bicycle and gained a whole new appreciation for metal, and I’m no longer a metal snob. Indeed, I desperately crave a nice used metal lathe. I know I’m rambling here, forgive me, but perhaps you are aware of the Cole Porter song, “It’s De-Lovely!”? In the preamble to the song, the woman begins,<br />
<i> “I feel a certain urge to sing/<br /> The kind of ditty that invokes the Spring!” </i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_A0fI05AoBGzdT-G2fkwA9ur6PSpydwNbhIiL5aTzQhU6HvGxjowbJ4d56Gz3MsP4t_ouv0d6jO0x2USMVOJpJPBJcHIIlKP-BoVpKeAuDmsAjMpp6M1OZTjPiJsLUdKXP1mmou8WbSE/s1600/94Tourlite5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_A0fI05AoBGzdT-G2fkwA9ur6PSpydwNbhIiL5aTzQhU6HvGxjowbJ4d56Gz3MsP4t_ouv0d6jO0x2USMVOJpJPBJcHIIlKP-BoVpKeAuDmsAjMpp6M1OZTjPiJsLUdKXP1mmou8WbSE/s1600/94Tourlite5.jpeg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
With my fetish for a metal lathe, I want to sing,<br />
<i> “I feel a certain urge to knurl…”</i><br />
<br />
But I haven’t thought of a good word to rhyme with knurl! I have the complete sets of the <i>Popular Mechanics Do-It-Yourself Encyclopedia</i>, both the 1954 and 1968 editions, and in both sets, it seems you just couldn’t be a “real man” unless you had a metal lathe in the basement! Amazing how much the idea of DIY was much more prevalent earlier in the last century. I’m glad you are bringing back the art of craft. Craft is good. The work of hands is good!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRzd8k3nx1fDOCsuInq5-IiIRZBqWNAzdwaCPWT0aODzbMoLbdz62HsMCTF8EdX1QaFnqkaSzyZljtpZuIR9nJbyvWwVqs-BzgiD56ZjIkFFrkRd_ZfFho3h_smMUtz1YiE4hoLyA6bB8/s1600/94Tourlite6.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRzd8k3nx1fDOCsuInq5-IiIRZBqWNAzdwaCPWT0aODzbMoLbdz62HsMCTF8EdX1QaFnqkaSzyZljtpZuIR9nJbyvWwVqs-BzgiD56ZjIkFFrkRd_ZfFho3h_smMUtz1YiE4hoLyA6bB8/s1600/94Tourlite6.jpeg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I actually have an idea for a garden implement that I am going to fabricate from 3/4” copper pipe that I think might even be patentable (in my fondest dreams!), and I’m looking forward to designing and redesigning and building it. And I also have an idea for a backpack frame that might be workable.<br />
<br />
Anyway, in this age of electronics, which is also building things, and I’m not an electronics snob either, and in fact I want to learn all about electronics and maybe build a simple computer, or perhaps you are aware of the factoring machines that use rotating chains to find prime numbers….<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd6s6qVz9HkKFYR81YbPv3W4qe3hXE_ePBnBpk2my61NpKklTDHnh5CiCV5aGCrH94G4GR2KxjEAoVwsBwSYVUd2gcdHTuhdiZVeRK8_DXRHdnaBMDYnDkinGCCwhySnWWnVQArbQv6n0/s1600/94Tourlite1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd6s6qVz9HkKFYR81YbPv3W4qe3hXE_ePBnBpk2my61NpKklTDHnh5CiCV5aGCrH94G4GR2KxjEAoVwsBwSYVUd2gcdHTuhdiZVeRK8_DXRHdnaBMDYnDkinGCCwhySnWWnVQArbQv6n0/s1600/94Tourlite1.jpeg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
As I was saying, before I got distracted there, in this age of electronics and social media, I just want to congratulate you on building things that are so beautiful, so spare, and yet so efficient, effective and useful! And I hope my next bike will be built around a Bilenky frame!<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading through this screed, and, basically, just thank you for all you do!<br />

It has road races, downhill, an expo and is generally a great place to hang out in the spring sunshine in a beautiful part of the country.<br />
<br />
BCW met a lot of interesting people and saw some great bikes, and noted lots of new products. Who knows; maybe next year BCW will make the cross-country trip to have a full presence there... In the meantime here are a few photos and comments about the event.<br />
<br />
It was good to talk to the people at <a href="http://www.bikefriday.com/" target="_blank">Bike Friday</a>, demonstrating their neat set-up for a folding travel bike and matching trailer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguts6DP2z2UQyewgBzx2CeERd1h-aQyfhIqLC0xB9R_gnbbYU2f3_pEyhTs21B-LNjUmtKMjsWnwwEDL-s8T_7C_Z4oEn92cIkHLCDJIC3ZwrtQnGrYP00d1_tCqnl-zlCRq5dKEecNV8/s1600/seaotter1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguts6DP2z2UQyewgBzx2CeERd1h-aQyfhIqLC0xB9R_gnbbYU2f3_pEyhTs21B-LNjUmtKMjsWnwwEDL-s8T_7C_Z4oEn92cIkHLCDJIC3ZwrtQnGrYP00d1_tCqnl-zlCRq5dKEecNV8/s1600/seaotter1.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.shinola.com/shop/bicycles.html" target="_blank">Shinola</a> from Detroit had an elegant display of their handmade steel bikes, which you could try out, and which definitely stood out amongst all the mountain bikes and fat tires that pretty much dominated the event.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX6im_hs4_mVQ1Z3qY-3sNRLZPwDv4drtWrkZBlwXozr_iq0w00hB4rai_TNLyVsWO1cPOMEtvdF3ALb9tQwAJsrLQ5L86q4mTUhu-j7bYvmmWLz9O3B514rkdNqv53apegnnlIgEph7w/s1600/seaotter2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX6im_hs4_mVQ1Z3qY-3sNRLZPwDv4drtWrkZBlwXozr_iq0w00hB4rai_TNLyVsWO1cPOMEtvdF3ALb9tQwAJsrLQ5L86q4mTUhu-j7bYvmmWLz9O3B514rkdNqv53apegnnlIgEph7w/s1600/seaotter2.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There was a lot of attention for the new bike that <a href="http://www.salsacycles.com/" target="_blank">Salsa</a> displayed (for the first time in public?) - their new evolotion of the fat-bike, with full-suspension: the Bucksaw.<br />
<br />

<br />
And away from the Expo we had a lot of fun watching the racing, though sadly we didn't get a chance to try out the downhill track.<br />

<br />
And every so often we receive an email or even a photograph in an envelope, showing a Bilenky propped against a wall or in front of a mountain in some far-off land, or of someone's favourite bike that we modified with <a href="http://www.bilenky.com/#!what-is-a-retrofit/c22f8" target="_blank">S&S couplers</a> to make it all ready for long-distance travel.<br />

So it was great to hear from Dave and Loren, who are about to embark on Adventure Cycling's <a href="http://www.adventurecycling.org/cyclosource-store/route-maps/northern-tier-route/" target="_blank">Northern Tier Route</a> on the Bilenky <a href="http://www.bilenky.com/#!viewpoint/cb9e" target="_blank">Viewpoint</a> semi-recumbent travel tandem that we built for them, similar to this one. With S&S couplers the frame separates for packing into airline-size cases.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sinewavecycles.com/" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.sinewavecycles.com/" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi71ensJJZTVNsws9jW1horhCTORDfMRji-cafXnx3pn1ZphXiNDe7HJwveacu_pSK_dDLknjGlQwqcKe_eWPnNigdSKrriozL2BfjzQtR83po0_p6oYAfMmEU6fHlwnrqBci_SVgLBUwA/s1600/sinewavelogo.png" height="253" title="" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.sinewavecycles.com/" target="_blank">Sinewave Cycles</a> (formerly BikeBright) is based in Cambridge, MA, and their products are made in the USA too. Here's why we like them so much.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sinewavecycles.com/collections/all/products/sinewave-revolution" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.sinewavecycles.com/collections/all/products/sinewave-revolution" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk9cbRu3YV153lApikhuA-0keZy9lUcLpuxDQGvbh6xwoPLUXvGBEgh0EBM6pZ75mnvnjDzRjHWbbyji5eqQal1KbDq8reZU5A3y9yNsPxMBdoKC4Tzj97qjTDcVcVqcK_PsQnzESx1Hc/s1600/sw_render_1024x1024.jpg" height="230" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.sinewavecycles.com/collections/all/products/sinewave-revolution" target="_blank">Revolution</a> is simple and effective: plug it in to your front-wheel dynamo - in this case a Shimano DH-3D72; but it worked just fine with a Supernova Infinity too - and then use the USB outlet to charge up your iPhone, iPod, digital camera, or pretty much anything else with a USB port. (We even managed to charge an iPad with it, though we're not sure whether that's officially recommended!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgreQ6ZU2kz60HwMxjWXRQ_OGgzYywWxECuHhHkxtVBv_ObLPaJPS8XSCBOsKQNZ_ZpASWD5yVFN_Vj8WtNqjjAgsLLXHPGUvpQThzaB9vi8ZKqpUlMFFxK6OZTsz9zsDURsWxJe9nFMdc/s1600/bikebrightrevolution.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgreQ6ZU2kz60HwMxjWXRQ_OGgzYywWxECuHhHkxtVBv_ObLPaJPS8XSCBOsKQNZ_ZpASWD5yVFN_Vj8WtNqjjAgsLLXHPGUvpQThzaB9vi8ZKqpUlMFFxK6OZTsz9zsDURsWxJe9nFMdc/s1600/bikebrightrevolution.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Although touring cyclists are not usually so concerned with the weight of their rig, for us one of the great advantages of the Revolution are it's size and weight. It really is about the same as a box of matches. It's sturdy and compact, easily tucked into a framebag. It's even water-proof (though thankfully we didn't have the need to test this claim)!<br />
<br />
So we highly recommend the Revolution for touring. It doesn't have a battery for storage, but we simply unplugged the lights during the day and used it to charge electronics. It worked flawlessly. And there are other options too that you check out on the Sinewave <a href="http://www.sinewavecycles.com/collections/all" target="_blank">website</a> for charging or running multiple items.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkB_TuMBVo80faA45DmFGMw4MEUsDhZHZHte870GF_wXu2xBqVTfYjkYimrrRn_Ezi4BKfLv_IPQjtCFANrA5bJTiVYKXhu686A-5APauE3Wn42k69Rw1lfOWHFUJp0yJfd-IeEbCWuo4/s1600/topeakiphone.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkB_TuMBVo80faA45DmFGMw4MEUsDhZHZHte870GF_wXu2xBqVTfYjkYimrrRn_Ezi4BKfLv_IPQjtCFANrA5bJTiVYKXhu686A-5APauE3Wn42k69Rw1lfOWHFUJp0yJfd-IeEbCWuo4/s1600/topeakiphone.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The set-up was very simple. A <a href="http://www.topeak.com/products/PanoBike/ridecase_ip5_bk" target="_blank">Topeak RideCase</a> iPhone holder mounts easily onto the stem without taking up handlebar space. Then just add your iPhone and the useful <a href="http://www.gaiagps.com/apps/" target="_blank">Gaia</a> GPS app (maps can be downloaded) and hey - you're all set to explore...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We were amongst five unique businesses who are masters of their craft selected to participate in this award. We would like to thank <a href="https://us.thebalvenie.com/" target="_blank">The Balvenie</a> and the <a href="http://craftcouncil.org/" target="_blank">American Craft Council</a> for giving us the opportunity to feature our work alongside so many other talented and skilled people. We welcome the opportunity to demonstrate just how good 'Made in America' can be - and to show the time, effort and cost that go into to crafting something of the very highest quality.<br />
<br />
And we'd like to take this opportunity to salute the four other participants in this event and refer you to their remarkable products...<br />

On the Bilenky Cycle Works
stand, we weren’t selling any custom frames, but instead took the
chance to clear out a selection of nice used, new and nearly-new parts.
We also shifted a lot of old tires with plenty of mileage left. <br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Another unique bike that we built to commission - to be fast, light... and a tandem.<br />
<br />
This bike is for a team where the captain is 6'7" and the stoker 5'2". They already owned some very fine bikes - a <a href="http://calfeedesign.com/" target="_blank">Calfee Design</a> Di2 tandem and a <a href="http://www.rodcycle.com/" target="_blank">Rodriguez Cycles</a> steel tourer - and we were happy to add a BCW special to their stable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOzHGDHiZJz0BolO87zpStV9lY4PykCJ0eVLRZB6weFxE8ojABwdRu_LmX84SWms1MUe5eZK4pFgom6Pqd8a49Y5w1SJ5MwuvWBxyoVOtoODwUG188CXTTGSth8HW6NXVW1697XFOa44U/s1600/oldtom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Ti Racing Tandem" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOzHGDHiZJz0BolO87zpStV9lY4PykCJ0eVLRZB6weFxE8ojABwdRu_LmX84SWms1MUe5eZK4pFgom6Pqd8a49Y5w1SJ5MwuvWBxyoVOtoODwUG188CXTTGSth8HW6NXVW1697XFOa44U/s1600/oldtom.jpg" height="265" title="Ti Racing Tandem" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The ti tandem we created for them has full touring capacity, with S&S couplers, lightweight high-end components, and a rigid construction through oversize tubing that makes it stiff and responsive.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheqbXmPU-gRrYgkL8GGpSq3iHlPtHhpe7THhC_cIlee_B3PeB_zxSfAdGa5irTNIbKtoy6k5mcMqDx1pBDBuHBEAM5XzLr18W8hH7nJO4rHugezRHkIgXV29jWl2BLCIwfWVWgcwuGj08/s1600/B.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheqbXmPU-gRrYgkL8GGpSq3iHlPtHhpe7THhC_cIlee_B3PeB_zxSfAdGa5irTNIbKtoy6k5mcMqDx1pBDBuHBEAM5XzLr18W8hH7nJO4rHugezRHkIgXV29jWl2BLCIwfWVWgcwuGj08/s1600/B.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Frame construction</b><br />
<ul>
<li>open/no-lateral construction frame design - the lateral was omitted for simplicity and for weight saving (for both speed and as it's a travel bike)</li>
<li>oversize tubing to compensate and provide strength: down-tube 2", bottom tube 2", topt-tube 1 3/4", seat-tube 1 1/2" </li>
<li>oversize head-tube to accommodate an 1 1/4" Reynolds Carbon Tandem Fork</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ4QkF5HHwPGlONM0VUxXI4oapldeZkjuZ-JS9RzpHK_nj1R5FQIKAsMtDBTmE7sYp-XC0h33LalkqVqGsVP8JD881U6GywvyCvEEoo8xJLr5xRGAB0f1IEbnWp2g4X0dTsy1ED4auUj8/s1600/fork.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ4QkF5HHwPGlONM0VUxXI4oapldeZkjuZ-JS9RzpHK_nj1R5FQIKAsMtDBTmE7sYp-XC0h33LalkqVqGsVP8JD881U6GywvyCvEEoo8xJLr5xRGAB0f1IEbnWp2g4X0dTsy1ED4auUj8/s1600/fork.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>
We used <a href="https://www.paragonmachineworks.com/" target="_blank">Paragon Machine Works</a> low-mount expedition disc dropouts, which allow for a
chainstay mounted disc brake and mountings for fenders and a rack. We recommend Paragon components for most of our ti frames.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7RBOg739pxAUdVdPrLwke0tDKDAPOwZRuHfx_5WbiVQhXehzMnL3RxupB4ipCXPqZltBWfnJ6UzryYPAAJ0ExZOAYhoxTLKlMxwBeGcKhOB55Itn51nL7pSsacZNs-3grt9JV-CxOj9M/s1600/B-rear2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7RBOg739pxAUdVdPrLwke0tDKDAPOwZRuHfx_5WbiVQhXehzMnL3RxupB4ipCXPqZltBWfnJ6UzryYPAAJ0ExZOAYhoxTLKlMxwBeGcKhOB55Itn51nL7pSsacZNs-3grt9JV-CxOj9M/s1600/B-rear2.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Frame detailing</b><br />
<ul>
<li>the stoker stem is not mounted on seatpost but is an integral part of the toptube - pierced through and welded in</li>
<li>this allows more choice of stems and retains a space between bars and captain's seatpost (so you can use a handlebar bag when touring)</li>
</ul>

<br />
One of the pleasures of this build was that the customer was very specific in how he wanted the bike to look and ride, and took an active part in the design process. As a result of this ongoing dialogue and exchange of ideas, the design of the bicycle evolved as we built it. The result is beautiful and unique.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf89Ho-Y5EGHIMH99AdZlQuCQaQMKXJYnZInp8agi4o6FPOtqSNIwk0chQaScIxr6AHA55oxc4Nr_Hq41okJtjsWZa0SR1EzNhFth7eB9QhK8T7sSQcNloBDIUc63ntWXN5koeC5I-eUM/s1600/ottorando1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf89Ho-Y5EGHIMH99AdZlQuCQaQMKXJYnZInp8agi4o6FPOtqSNIwk0chQaScIxr6AHA55oxc4Nr_Hq41okJtjsWZa0SR1EzNhFth7eB9QhK8T7sSQcNloBDIUc63ntWXN5koeC5I-eUM/s1600/ottorando1.png" height="287" width="400" /></a></div>

<b>Paint</b><br />
<ul>
<li>Pearlescent Lunar Peach - gold and pink pearl over custom mixed color to emulate the moon's rising color. Fun process story- originally the customer wanted a classic grey. When he came to the shop to pick up two other bikes we had modified and repainted for him, the painter took him outside to discuss grey armed with the color books. As they were talking about color and the love of bicycling, a delivery truck arrived with a package. After running the delivery inside, the color book was randomly open to a page with some peaches and Naomi the painter pointed to it and said "one day I'd like to paint a bike a color like that because it reminds me of the moon". The customer appreciated the recommendation and seeing her other work, he enthusiastically gave her full artistic freedom.</li>

<br />
We're going to keep any changes as minimal as possible, but there will be some price rise for most BCW products and services. Some things won't go up. Most things will.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggxsI9n25KWBBmTuvPVY2n6Cb4UPQxRSTzXFp1-H4W1KNLGLPpSAQpu5LlW_j1twXWhasVp3h92-3hRtxtcha90s8gz6_39twg7jPIcNrpkiGFHvq2LcZ-TBQD7Lqqh0GljtlyL5KdPmU/s1600/ti_bike.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggxsI9n25KWBBmTuvPVY2n6Cb4UPQxRSTzXFp1-H4W1KNLGLPpSAQpu5LlW_j1twXWhasVp3h92-3hRtxtcha90s8gz6_39twg7jPIcNrpkiGFHvq2LcZ-TBQD7Lqqh0GljtlyL5KdPmU/s1600/ti_bike.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<b>All new 2014 prices will go into effect on Febuary 1st.</b><br />
<br />
<b> </b>So, if you're thinking of getting your bike retrofitted with S&S couplers in order to travel with it; if you're thinking of getting any repairs or restoration done on that old classic in the garage; and particularly if you're planning to order a custom frame or complete new bicycle from us this year, now is the time to do it.<br />
<br />
Place your order and put down a deposit, and that way your custom build is locked into 2013 prices. Call or email us to discuss this.<br />

<i>- BCW</i>BCW Crewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16695887275246502640noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5795297769526607415.post-17218058364148862592014-01-10T16:31:00.004-05:002014-01-13T10:28:40.658-05:00Bina's Africa BikeBina is taking some time away from the shop for a few months to undertake a pretty awesome journey - she's working as part of the support crew for the 2014 <a href="http://www.tourdafrique.com/" target="_blank">Tour d'Afrique</a> overland ride that goes all the way from Khartoum to Cape Town, a 12,000km journey through some of the most amazing places in the world.<br />
<br />
She'll be riding for much of the time and a special trip demands a special bike - so here's a rundown on the custom bike that Bina ordered and is now riding in Africa. A cross between an agile mountain bike and a traditional touring bike. Already officially named <i>Le Petit Graveleur</i>. Of course, it's a Signature Bilenky - literally:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRY_PHGBZVhS5AvKBKOxtJacYybQUoJEAd8ijDXvCZZRWmYug8oqFf8Q80QwAiWAQiRXQb3FnfmqZJkwxOA0iLNbJm71flPbbO-Ulmo-mX6pN68_o-1yqP4pRW9_dQvu50INe2QDr6Srk/s1600/graveleur1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRY_PHGBZVhS5AvKBKOxtJacYybQUoJEAd8ijDXvCZZRWmYug8oqFf8Q80QwAiWAQiRXQb3FnfmqZJkwxOA0iLNbJm71flPbbO-Ulmo-mX6pN68_o-1yqP4pRW9_dQvu50INe2QDr6Srk/s1600/graveleur1.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Built from lightweight steel to a very special design:<br />
<br />
- True Temper heat-treated <b>downtube</b> with an ovalized profile - stronger, lighter and with a small-radius curve behind the headtube, to be more resistant to buckle-failure. A rigid bike takes a lot of front-impact - so rather than a heavy tube we used a different shape to get the same strength.<br />
<br />
- Undersized thin-wall <b>toptube</b> - a 7/8 diameter tube, smaller than most production bikes, increasing the lightness and comfort of the bike to match the weight of the rider. Not every mountain bike has to have oversized tubing. We build bikes that match the uniqueness of every rider. That means we choose tubing that matches the rider and <i>where</i> and <i>how</i> they're going to ride.<br />
<br />
Check out those curves. Custom top-tube kept low to allow an easy standover clearance. Large tire capacity to allow 2" of rubber to tackle any kind of terrain. Wide curved stays and a special bi-plane fork crown. Fork blades are lightweight - again tuned to match the rider and absorb bumps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOHmhzAuDwcnR33zp1Vk4sR7nMi2JiKzmXJ8Q8_Z4txNxLNAcs167gShN4RBd-xc6cbd3QMvU3cQi0_6d34KliLMlJbPiMhLkyzyowDYKrmUoj8ADBlAMwz3bnPswJHlGvrWIY28q-O6k/s1600/graveleur2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOHmhzAuDwcnR33zp1Vk4sR7nMi2JiKzmXJ8Q8_Z4txNxLNAcs167gShN4RBd-xc6cbd3QMvU3cQi0_6d34KliLMlJbPiMhLkyzyowDYKrmUoj8ADBlAMwz3bnPswJHlGvrWIY28q-O6k/s1600/graveleur2.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Comfortable geometry to allow for all day riding.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWXd1Rbk1L8th5sN_pauEYthrybRLqhjShDrKJjZ5kalO7dQUPa97JLdVdyHgJXSajLC0SGwoFyXsKdXj5o6TIBtvlb40ssG71yInkm9r_DLsMxxrqICFz6gxXcKN_G7be7CC4u8rTUIw/s1600/graveleur4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWXd1Rbk1L8th5sN_pauEYthrybRLqhjShDrKJjZ5kalO7dQUPa97JLdVdyHgJXSajLC0SGwoFyXsKdXj5o6TIBtvlb40ssG71yInkm9r_DLsMxxrqICFz6gxXcKN_G7be7CC4u8rTUIw/s1600/graveleur4.png" width="315" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The custom cable-run on the toptube allows us to go between the seatstays (a benefit for smaller bikes) and visually follows the curve of the toptubes and compliments the lines of the frame. Attention to detail. Intelligent design.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Jz4kmuW4XiaVjX_NUDk2AzqyR9D2Pz6svoefar4KdIiKizPaHU6tCuVtD0UBwCAPY6fI5USXgwTpBrS6oq5TfGXUy9yXswbk5lK5NT0ujQc_X2wRSFei76FfRD96haiy7ejNLln0PQ8/s1600/graveleur5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Jz4kmuW4XiaVjX_NUDk2AzqyR9D2Pz6svoefar4KdIiKizPaHU6tCuVtD0UBwCAPY6fI5USXgwTpBrS6oq5TfGXUy9yXswbk5lK5NT0ujQc_X2wRSFei76FfRD96haiy7ejNLln0PQ8/s1600/graveleur5.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The finished bike all built up and ready to ride. Components as follows:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Cantilever bikes allow mud-clearance with simplicity of repair in a touring situation. We thought about disc brakes but they just weren't necessary.</li>
<li>Brooks B17 Narrow Imperial, a comfortable saddle for many women riders.</li>
<li>A hand-picked groupset that combines high-end road parts for lightness with a 2x10 mountain range - simple front-shifting but lightweight and practical. Remember that three-quarters of the weight of most bikes is components. Here we're able to balance durability and quality and weight - it's possible.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.whiteind.com/" target="_blank">White Industries</a> hubs - light, durable, made in the USA. We love'em. Free spinning, we've been putting them on Bilenky custom bikes for 20 years and will probably continue to do so for another 20. Laced to DT Rims, our rim of choice.</li>
<li>Panaracer Protek tires to protect against thorns and rocks. A lightweight version of a big tire for a suspension-like ride.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.chrisking.com/" target="_blank">Chris King</a> headset - the industry standard.</li>
<li>Cross levers for extra comfort and variety of riding position.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixFHehUxMW6QCxMVKk0g2FjUdrk5VIKwUs3wY3IVg0TR2AOENbThsZxhqklayCsTNQnU8ZrLCuNETvxUOcYVlrqXlrr96GM1wYgyqYpPxLWhvLc8EV7mogu8hD4aX2kH2XFefZpxWZAiA/s1600/graveleur3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="411" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixFHehUxMW6QCxMVKk0g2FjUdrk5VIKwUs3wY3IVg0TR2AOENbThsZxhqklayCsTNQnU8ZrLCuNETvxUOcYVlrqXlrr96GM1wYgyqYpPxLWhvLc8EV7mogu8hD4aX2kH2XFefZpxWZAiA/s1600/graveleur3.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And here it is on location in another continent, complete with a Berthoud saddlebag ideal for a supported tour or credit-card touring:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtHAOXix8mWB_DDT_0MFJIj3imtJb088XWHj6glF9JNL7mO6vy4BYIhsG14AFKGXR73gMGdGj-bRtqhLoZnsIzicr4tcKmng7Gp2RtuPUSigIlNjZwqU-L0fGJiwDEtyUyvIfezeRYQBE/s1600/graveleur6.png" width="585" /></div>
<br />
All of these options that go into making this bike unique and appropriate for Bina's journey are available to build into all of our custom bikes. But of course, you'll have all your own requirements. For us that is one the pleasures of being a custom builder. You can change any component on a production bike, but with custom everything about the frame is changeable. You're unique and your bike should be too.<br />
<br />
You can follow Bina's trip at the Tour D'Afrique <a href="http://tourdafrique.com/2014/01/ready-to-roll-in-khartoum/" target="_blank">blog</a>. We'll be asking her again later on how she's getting on with the bike.<br />

<br />
Or more precisely, the sound of falling timber as one of the undoubtedly ancient trees that surround the workshop and - at certain more summery times of the year (honestly) - suggest the atmosphere of a scenic rural idyll, a green tranquillity, even right in the heart of post-industrial Olney - anyway, to get to the point, when the storms hit the tree fell. On us.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD6W0oSPkNMKciTdr2EovuK5sYmtW42fUfbBLPsH1lZeEPR1sQZQm40py6a30x6QqKP_-8ts1NM5JaRP-p1r6fkLogT6WXa8c-v-ku6VH289i73z6UVXQ1KiUPFgsAjBCECxNnlitAZpI/s1600/tree2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD6W0oSPkNMKciTdr2EovuK5sYmtW42fUfbBLPsH1lZeEPR1sQZQm40py6a30x6QqKP_-8ts1NM5JaRP-p1r6fkLogT6WXa8c-v-ku6VH289i73z6UVXQ1KiUPFgsAjBCECxNnlitAZpI/s1600/tree2.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_1703199095"></span><br />
<br />
Seriously, right onto the workshop. Luckily no one was inside at the time, though according to Ferdinand it made quite a noise and seriously disrupted that day's maneourvres in his ongoing campaign against the ever rising rodent armies of Northern Philadelphia. Never mind, big guy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfwflHtkJ2Nqhyphenhyphen8BEiiG9V5DfBwNUeC6Pvg1ScjijAFrNX9rl7Uw0q2ygCzGKFn0fzDTI4KQ-ZFFyh-vHRCmX67sJcrp5_l4vQ_abd92gNFxExMAoQuRkLygj0LVeYBKFRn5PV9BBoeM/s1600/comfortingthebigguy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfwflHtkJ2Nqhyphenhyphen8BEiiG9V5DfBwNUeC6Pvg1ScjijAFrNX9rl7Uw0q2ygCzGKFn0fzDTI4KQ-ZFFyh-vHRCmX67sJcrp5_l4vQ_abd92gNFxExMAoQuRkLygj0LVeYBKFRn5PV9BBoeM/s1600/comfortingthebigguy.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And even luckier - perhaps using up so much luck that we're worried how much we have left for the rest of the year - the building was not damaged either. No bikes got flattened.<br />
<br />
The electricity company arrived on scene and cut part of it away from the wires. Then it snowed, and thawed, and froze, in quick succession. Meaning we still haven't quite got round to clearing the entrance. (If we had a good old wood-burning stove this would be helping tremendously with our heating bill - but we don't.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHEwbbBJavExR7_0M9Kf9ygPtbo-HFtb_blVYzPz9UT5JUUFtRo-SrnRKmAAXucYKkjfgSw6TAkx5J1MEaVN1MZycsO_sD3DiPsobKJXfNKePsLqy2FbP7B4JXWq8_v7zeDFT54eOzBG0/s1600/tree1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHEwbbBJavExR7_0M9Kf9ygPtbo-HFtb_blVYzPz9UT5JUUFtRo-SrnRKmAAXucYKkjfgSw6TAkx5J1MEaVN1MZycsO_sD3DiPsobKJXfNKePsLqy2FbP7B4JXWq8_v7zeDFT54eOzBG0/s1600/tree1.JPG" height="400" width="335" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Advisory warning to visitors: be prepared to hack your way through the undergrowth to get in the door. <i>Machete optional.</i><br />
<br />
And if that wasn't all enough, the power went off, and then we get a once-in-20-years record temperature low - the Arctic Vortex in media-event-speak - as recorded here on the PECO tower in Center City Philly:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFk9fDAl4ILx-41UueYWCZt8TZG3gKbRn1DV9HXci6Fw7RuP4nnPmwthYiU9GPzgBFJGjTP9NvdA-Bx9r0o8n1BY5EFBe1E5DgsEpHQyG2G-gwNS3-g8f-DspicMCLPcR4N9VXt9Hbju8/s1600/peco4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFk9fDAl4ILx-41UueYWCZt8TZG3gKbRn1DV9HXci6Fw7RuP4nnPmwthYiU9GPzgBFJGjTP9NvdA-Bx9r0o8n1BY5EFBe1E5DgsEpHQyG2G-gwNS3-g8f-DspicMCLPcR4N9VXt9Hbju8/s1600/peco4.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yep, that's 4 fahrenheit - or -15.5 for those of you who work in centigrade. First time most of us here have seen single digit temps on this thing. Does it even have a <i>minus figure</i> capacity? (Can anyone tell us?) Thankfully we didn't find out this time... We feel for everyone in the Midwest and Canada shivering in even colder climes.<br />
<br />
Luckily there's always a brazing torch or two running inside to keep us warm, as the work goes on:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxcEPhZ3cAKvQoDwbTInJuVJA5dHVb1U72ovBZxfPVcrISZb_Q5nJJv60NlpRbCynG9e1RSQT8nukGZbC1InrA8QABL_KYipK7hiufEl29OlZJzHBecSNPJiGzBU0S_cXiAHO8Wvj7vqo/s1600/brazinsb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxcEPhZ3cAKvQoDwbTInJuVJA5dHVb1U72ovBZxfPVcrISZb_Q5nJJv60NlpRbCynG9e1RSQT8nukGZbC1InrA8QABL_KYipK7hiufEl29OlZJzHBecSNPJiGzBU0S_cXiAHO8Wvj7vqo/s1600/brazinsb.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So here's to a good 2014 for everyone. Now it's back to building all those custom dream bikes...<br />

<br />
With only a few days left of 2013 (OK, actually about a week or so), it seems only right and natural that our thoughts turn back to what a year it's been here at BCW...<br />
<br />
Our production level has stepped up, as we've continued to push beautiful custom bikes out the front door several times a week. We've created some pretty incredible titanium tandems. Staff beards have reached unprecedented lengths. Ferdinand the cat is on his way to being an internet star... And we continue to be amazed and humbled by the incredible support we get from all the friends of BCW. So here is a seasonal shout-out to all of you.<b> </b><br />
<b> </b><br />
<b>PHILLY BIKE EXPO 2013</b><br />
<br />
We got a bigger space this year and you rocked it. The Expo continues to grow into something we never imagined. Yes, we're already planning 2014. So thanks to everyone - exhibitors, volunteers, guests - and in particular...<br />

<br />
<br />
... and holy crap was that some race. You are all crazy. We lost count of just how many of you showed up to take yourself and your bike into places that bikes and people are clearly not meant to go. We are in awe of you. Seriously, thanks folks for making it the best Junkyard Cross yet.<br />
<br />
Special thanks go to Dave Prior of SSCXWC who did such a great job of making it happen. Bilenky + SSCXWC was even better than we thought it would be (and we knew it would be pretty good). Competitors, sponsors, volunteers, drinkers, crazy nude guy -- we salute you all.<br />
<br />
Pix? Results? More write-up? Limited edition 2013 race t-shirts (still available)? Yep, all <a href="http://sscxwc13philly.com/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Seen this? Check out Red Bull's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1LRIpyKhqI" target="_blank">video</a> of the race and Urban Velo's <a href="http://urbanvelo.org/bilenky-junkyard-cross-2013-photo-gallery/" target="_blank">gallery</a>.<br />
<br />
And last but not least, here's another <a href="http://www.cycleboredom.com/sscxwc13philly-through-the-lens-of-dylan-vanweelden/" target="_blank">set of pictures</a> we like.<br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>See you all next year!</i><br />

<div style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<div>
The masses have spoken, and they are tired of shifting. Over 100 riders are in the SSCX class so that's moving up on the agenda … especially since the ones that make the finals are also qualified to race for the Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships on Sunday. Things might get serious this Saturday. But probably not.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
SCHEDULE</div>
<div>
9:30am: Gates open for registration, number pickup, general hanging out.</div>
<div>
10am-Noon: SSCX Qualifier Heats</div>
<div>
Noon-1pm: Men's B Qualifier Heats, Women's Qualifier Heats</div>
<div>
1-3pm: Championship Races (Freak, Men's B, Women's, Men's A, SSCX)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you've been to Bilenky Junkyard 'Cross before, you know times are loose. But be aware that we'll have over 200 racers for the first time ever. So it will be run tighter than a fresh set of windshield wipers. Get there early to get your paperwork done and into costume.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Day of Registration is allowed. $20 per race, cash.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Beer tent will be open, $1 each (racers will get a few for free). </div>
<div>
Chewy's will be back to feed us, too.</div>
<div>
And a super-special limited edition T is fresh off the presses, too.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
IMPORTANT: This year you'll enter through the driveway to Big Guy's Used Auto Parts, NOT Bilenky Cycle Works. That door will be locked. Go around on Mascher Ave. If you're driving and parking at the Olney Train Station (which would be smart) then it's easy to get into the Junkyard from there.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you're riding from town, a group will be leaving Love Park, JFK Plaza at 9am. LEAVING is the important word there. And you want to be in a pack on the parts of town we have to ride through. Safety in numbers, kids.</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
REMINDER: This isn't actually a "Junkyard" it's a store. Big Guy's sells all the stuff we'll be racing around and through. So don't smash stuff. Don't jump up on stuff. Don't climb up on stuff. Don't make your own barrier. Don't owe them money you don't got.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

Which seems like a good excuse to go all dang patriotic on y'all and show off a Bilenky that rolled out of the shop recently, built to a very specific set of customer requirements... (And why the heck not?)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy4cqKt0Ph2tj2oJ2w-advBFbdjVX0hrwJh5BPzMRFJZFX6hKYFV5I7o01H0vW2zAAQPL6LOUXhQXxpqsjdp2_kmUifKX0iblLql1ZTEsz0C0AcF0H-ubHgppXi3H-4Qg5zvtQwqU585w/s1600/USABilenkycross1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy4cqKt0Ph2tj2oJ2w-advBFbdjVX0hrwJh5BPzMRFJZFX6hKYFV5I7o01H0vW2zAAQPL6LOUXhQXxpqsjdp2_kmUifKX0iblLql1ZTEsz0C0AcF0H-ubHgppXi3H-4Qg5zvtQwqU585w/s320/USABilenkycross1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a Signature Bilenky Monster Cross, a lightweight gravel-grinder / cyclocross / multi-surface tourer, with the specification that (within reason) as much of the bike and its componentry as possible should be USA-made.<br />
<br />
Well, OK. You probably know by now that Bilenky is always up for a challenge, so here's what we came up with...<br />
<ul>
<li><i>Frame</i> - True Temper OX - light, strong, we like it </li>
<li><i>Wheels </i>- Velocity, originally from Australia and now <a href="http://www.velocityusa.com/" target="_blank">built in Florida</a></li>
<li><i>Hubs, BB and crankset</i> - <a href="http://www.whiteind.com/" target="_blank">White Industries</a>, of course</li>
<li><i>Brakes and cross levers</i> - from Chico's finest, <a href="http://www.paulcomp.com/" target="_blank">Paul Components</a></li>
<li><i>Shifters </i>- courtesy of the friendly goats at <a href="http://www.retroshift.com/" target="_blank">Retroshift </a>and a great product that's now officially Woodchuck (TM) recommended. Note: These are really good for touring as well as 'cross.</li>
<li><i>Headset </i>- <a href="http://www.chrisking.com/" target="_blank">Chris King</a> (ah, that one was easy)</li>
<li>Saddle - <a href="http://www.selleanatomica.com/" target="_blank">Selle Anatomica</a> Titanico - made in Wisconsin, nice leather, a good alternative to Brooks </li>
<li><i>Odds and ends</i> - Salsa bars, Thomson stem and seatpost</li>
<li><i>And the frame color</i> - Ford light blue (what else?).</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbu1ZMe-wZWv57dqU9Qj8FEn26PYbGqziTKbRdgw4PomEqpEVaURUpIwhxIraUJFxkut_RZaU_hjTLAkQ56l-R1nZcLbAIxqE2YT7oxEMNe764lEsE-cdhK4yXv5cFMFGZsJWTe5hEVy0/s1600/USABilenkycross2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbu1ZMe-wZWv57dqU9Qj8FEn26PYbGqziTKbRdgw4PomEqpEVaURUpIwhxIraUJFxkut_RZaU_hjTLAkQ56l-R1nZcLbAIxqE2YT7oxEMNe764lEsE-cdhK4yXv5cFMFGZsJWTe5hEVy0/s320/USABilenkycross2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />All of which shows you don't have to go (too) far to find great bike stuff. So, to all the other US frame builders and component manufacturers - have a great holiday and we salute you all!<br />

<br />BCW Crewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16695887275246502640noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5795297769526607415.post-5609442833364757632013-07-19T09:47:00.003-04:002013-07-19T09:47:54.627-04:00Goodbye and thanks for everything!Three years ago almost to the day, Steve hired me as a painting assistant. Since then I have painted and designed bikes, cut lugs, welded, brazed and polished, made graphics, written all kinds of things, wrangled cats, chased woodchucks, painted backdrops, set up two editions of the 'cross race, traveled, learned and gawked. It's been extraordinary.<br />
<br />
In a few weeks I am moving to NY to get my Master's in industrial design. I'm super excited, but I'm going to miss Philadelphia a great deal. The best people I've met here have been cyclists: mechanics, volunteers, messengers, casual riders, serious tourers- everyone shares a sense of adventurous curiosity and generous kindness. When I travel, it's always the cyclists who are the warmest hosts and best tour guides. I feel privileged to have met so many great people.<br />
<br />
One of the reasons I decided to go into industrial design is the potential to re-enter the bike industry as a designer in a few years. Design has always been my favorite aspect of the build process, and to do that full time is my dream job. We shall see.<br />
<br />
I'll be back for the Junkyard Cross and the Expo of course, and if you want to keep track of me<a href="http://isisshiffer.blogspot.com/"> I have a personal blog</a> that I update occasionally.<br />

We're making a limited run of exceptionally extraordinary bikes with all kinds of unique features, all built by Steve's talented little paws.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>WERK.</i></div>
We had moments of Zen.<br />

It's always great to be around sweet bikes and the nerds who love them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we went to BIKE RACE DAY and brought a keg in Naomi's Power Trailer:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>And later she rode home with an inebriated messenger in the Power Trailer. Circle of life!</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We watched guys in spandex ride around in circles: </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Go team Jelly Belly!</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upon discovering that one keg holds rather a lot of beer, we had to enlist the help of the Philadelphia Bike Messenger's Association so we could take it back to Victory Brewing:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>They killed it in about 15 minutes. Thanks guys!</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we all went home and fell over.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By the way, did you know we've been around for 30 years? 30 years of awesome bikes, weird bikes, big bikes, little bikes, and the evolution of Steve's beard.</div>

Oh, my. First of all, thanks to everyone who came out for the Bike Snob ride. Seems like everyone had a great time-- I know I did. <a href="http://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com/2013/05/philadelphia-i-went-there-and-stuff.html">Here's the snobby recap! </a>I'll put the promised photos up as soon as I get 'em.<br />
<br />
Ok, now on to IMPORTANT PROMOTIONAL PROMOTION!<br />
<br />
This weekend, as perhaps I've mentioned, we'll be at the Cirque Du Cyclisme looking at Old Bikes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Stride in style</i> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And we'd love to see you there. We'll bring a few of our own bikes and selection of Cool Stuff for the swap. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next weekend we're going touring. You should too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weekend AFTER that (June 1st and 2nd) is the bikiest weekend of the year. Here's what you're doing: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
SATURDAY: Go to <a href="http://www.theworksphilly.com/">The Works!</a> It's a race to benefit <a href="http://www.neighborhoodbikeworks.org/">Neighborhood Bike Works</a>, our favorite local non-profit. Ride around, do goofy things, enjoy the city, then go the Beaumont Warehouse and dance your tail off. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I for one had a blast. Cool bikes, the nicest people ever, and a lovely evening-- can't be improved on. I'll post pictures as they come.<br />
<br />
Also, today is the first day of our Bike Month retrofit special. Click <a href="http://www.bilenky.com/#!my-bike-is-steel/cxj2">here for details on steel,</a> and<a href="http://www.bilenky.com/#!my-bike-is-titanium/c1kbm"> here for details on titanium. </a>Do it now and get your bike back in time to get out of town when it gets really hot. In fact, with couplers you and your bike can get all the way down to the penguins.<br />
